Beyond the Bell – Youth Services Extended Summer Program will operate at 234 single track elementary and 59 single track middle school sites this summer. Dates of operation will be July 7 – August 1, 2008. Note: These are the same dates as the Summer School calendars for elementary and middle school sites. Hours of operation are from 12:20 – 6:00 p.m. , Monday – Friday. Some sites may have a slightly different ending time. A Community Lunch Program will be available at selected sites (to be determined and operated by Food Services). The program is free and available to all students in grades 2-8. There is no enrollment. Students are free to come and go as they choose. The program is considered permissive and students do not sign-in or out.
*NOTE: The playground operating days and/or hours of schools unable to maintain a sufficient attendance to support a full program throughout the day will be adjusted as necessary. Please check with the Youth Services playground coach for specific dates and hours of operation OR check for posted signage indicating any changes in dates and hours.

- The Extended Summer Program offers daily and traveling enrichment programs in dance, art, music, science, and a variety of games. Some past events include Lip Sync, talent contests, photojournalism clubs, basketball tournaments, drum/percussion, and 4-H science activities. Trips to amusement parks and beaches are very popular. One of our most popular activities involves a variety of water games that help keep participants cool.
- Students are engaged in structured programs that offer enrichment, team-building activities, and recreation. Each site conducts many competitions throughout the schedule. Prizes include ribbons and certificates.
- District sponsored trips include excursions to Ford Theater, Dodger games, Galaxy soccer games, X-Games, amusement parks, beaches, Hansen Dam, parks, Los Angeles Zoo, museums, Clear Creek Outdoor Education Center, and the Countrywide Classic Tennis Tournament. Some of these trips are free and others are offered for a reduced admission price.

Portable Pool Program
The Portable Pool Program visits 32 schools annually and conducts a two-week program, open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Four fully qualified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors are assigned to each pool to teach upper-grade elementary school children the basic skills of swimming and water safety. Each pool is 24-feet-long, 16-feet wide, filled to a depth of 30 inches, and is designed to assure maximum success with water safety. Provision for showers, chemical disinfectants, water purification, and filtration are assured. Pool sanitation is maintained in accordance with the standards prescribed by the Los Angeles County Health Department.
