Child Left Behind - FREE TUTORING Supplemental Educational Services FOR GENERAL INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL 213-241-7900 One of the primary components of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), signed January 8, 2002, requires that grade K-12 eligible students in specific schools be provided supplemental academic services such as tutoring. The NCLB legislation requires that school districts reserve 20% of their total Title One allocation to pay for compliance with the law. Therefore, all payment for FREE tutoring/supplemental educational services will be free to eligible students. Initial eligibility is determined by the school the student attends. If the school is in the second year or more of Program Improvement, then students who attend that school and who participate in the free/reduced meal program are eligible. Supplemental Educational Services are academic assistance or tutoring-type services offered before or after school, on weekends or during off-track time by state approved providers. The state approved over 200 organizations for 2007-08 to provide these services (prospective LAUSD providers click here to see the SES process flowchart). Thirty-nine providers chose to work with the students in the LAUSD in 2007-08. |

For 2007-08 there are over 324,000 students eligible for Supplemental Educational Services at 293 Program Improvement schools (click here to see the list of Program Improvement schools). The brochure with descriptions of the various providers was mailed to parents of eligible students on May 31st, 2007. It included a FREE tutoring Signup Sheet where parents can indicate their first and second choice for a provider for their eligible child’s FREE tutoring. The actual programs will be offered from September 2007 to June 2008. The first deadline is June 29, 2007, 5:00 p.m. The second deadline is August 31st, 007, 5:00 p.m. The final deadline for returning the sign-up sheet is October 19, 2007, 5:00 p.m. |
