District Announces the Cancellation of 2009-2010 Summer
School/Intersession Program for Elementary, Middle Schools |
Los Angeles—Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) officials today announced
that the 2009-2010 summer school/intersession for elementary and middle schools has
been cancelled due to declining revenues and the current State budget deficit.
“This is a sad day for our students, our parents and families, and our school district,” said LAUSD Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines. “In all of my years in education, I have
never seen budget news as bad as the number currently faced by this school district. As
a result, I have made a difficult decision and I have announced the cancellation of this
year’s summer school and intersession for elementary and middle school students.”
The District will offer summer school and intersession at the high school level for credit
recovery (graduation requirements, core classes and A-G classes) only. The Extended
School Year (ESY) Program, which serves eligible students with disabilities, will be
offered this summer.
The number of school sites offering summer school will be reduced due to limited
District resources.
The cancellation of summer school/intersession is expected to impact more than
225,000 students in the District, saving LAUSD roughly $34 million.
After cutting $567 million from its budget, the District still must cut an additional $131
million in six weeks before the end of the current school year. LAUSD faces more than
$336 million in new cuts for the 2009-2010 school year. |

LA84 Foundation and Beyond the Bell Branch Sports Tournament |

|
Los Angeles—The Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) Beyond the Bell Branch has been awarded a $549,300 grant by LA84 Foundation to support sports programs at all 85 LAUSD middle schools.
More than 15,000 boys and girls in the District are expected to participate in seasonal after school sports leagues in basketball, soccer, softball and flag football through the LA84 Foundation/Beyond the Bell Middle School Sports Program as a result of the grant.
“Our students will truly benefit from this generous grant. Not only will it allow thousands of middle school students to participate in afterschool athletics, but it will also help promote and encourage healthy and active lifestyle choices, which are important to students’ overall growth and development,” said Alvaro Cortés, LAUSD Assistant Superintendent, Extended Day Programs, which includes Beyond the Bell. “It also once again demonstrates the confidence an outside institution like LA84 Foundation has in Beyond the Bell and it believes that the work we do with youngsters is important and valuable for our communities.”
“The Beyond the Bell leadership and staff do an excellent job in providing quality sports programs that keep youngsters connected to their school in a safe environment,” said Anita L. DeFrantz, LA84 Foundation president. “We are pleased to support their efforts in the middle schools where youngsters in this critical age group will benefit from learning the life ready skills that sport participation teaches.”
In addition, youngsters in LAUSD elementary schools will benefit from a $250,000 grant awarded to LA’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow). That money will enable LA’s BEST to offer softball, basketball, flag football, and track and field to approximately 10,000 youngsters at 180 elementary schools.
LA84 Foundation was established to manage Southern California’s share of the surplus from the highly successful 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The Foundation received $93 million at its inception and, since then, has invested $182 million in sports programs serving more than two million youths in Southern California’s eight counties. |

Beyond the Bell Applies for 21st Century Grants |
Beyond the Bell is diligently working to establish more after school programs at new sites throughout the Los Angeles area and to expand some existing programs. As a part of this effort, new grants for funding are being submitted to the 21 st Century Community Learning Centers program of the California Department of Education to support academic and enrichment programming, as well as family literacy activity for parents and families of after school students. If successful, we expect to be able to serve several thousand more students beginning in Fall 2009 for five years through 2014. Check back during the summer of 2009 to see if there are new after school seats for elementary, middle and high school students in your neighborhood.
